At Active Animal Rehabilitation and Fitness, we are passionate about helping dogs live healthier, more comfortable lives as they age. Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a community presentation on Healthy Aging for Senior Dogs, where we provided education on how pet owners can best support their aging companions. The event had a fantastic turnout, and together we raised $50 for local charities—a wonderful testament to our community's dedication to canine well-being!
During the presentation, we covered essential aspects of senior dog care, including ways to prevent and manage common conditions such as:
One of the highlights of the evening was the engaging discussion on arthritis—a condition that affects many senior dogs but is often overlooked or misunderstood. Pet owners were eager to learn how to recognize signs of pain in their dogs, modify activities to reduce discomfort, and implement strategies to improve their pet’s quality of life.
A key takeaway from the presentation was the importance of weight management. With obesity being a common issue among senior dogs, we discussed how excess weight significantly increases joint stress, leading to a greater risk of pain and mobility issues. Maintaining an ideal body condition can make a world of difference in keeping our senior pets active and comfortable for as long as possible.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to this fundraiser. Your support not only helps spread awareness about senior dog health but also makes a meaningful impact on local charities.
If you missed the event but want to learn more about canine rehabilitation and how to support your senior dog, there will be another chance to see it in Summerside.
Together, we can help our beloved pets age gracefully and comfortably!

Meet Huxley, my first puppy client. He was diagnosed as a Swimmer Puppy. This is a canine developmental deformity that affects newborns. Swimmer Puppy Syndrome is characteristically seen as newborn puppies who have low muscle tone with an inability to bear weight through their limbs. As their siblings grow and develop normally, starting to use their legs to push, stand, and walk, a Swimmer Puppy is often found on their belly with legs splayed out to the side trying to propel themselves by swimming. They lack the muscle strength and control typical for normal development.
With proper support and regular therapy, a Swimmer Puppy has potential to improve and live a full and healthy life.

In the last few months, I have met with many different people to provide individual rehab to their dogs. The most common reason for consult is a hind end injury whether it be after a CCL injury and TPLO surgery, or a hip flexor strain, or multi-trauma from a motor vehicle accident. Sometimes, I'm consulted because owners notice their dog is stiffer when trying to get up and they want to try to help them.
Whatever the reason, this is why I created my business. I'm here for you and your dog or cat when they are not feeling themselves and you want to try to help them but are afraid to make it worse.
Let me help you learn how you can help them recover and live their best lives!

I'm so excited to share this! Today was another first for PEI.
This is the first collaboration between an Occupational Therapist and Physio for wheelchair fitting in a dog. Thanks Hayley Porter for adding your expertise to this service.
Meet Mouse. She is a 1 year old toy poodle who after undergoing several (unsuccessful) surgeries needed to have her right leg amputated.
She has been doing well with rehab overall but due to her age and long-term prognosis, we decided to fit her for her own wheelchair to help decrease long-term wear and tear on her joints and improve her mobility, independence, and quality of life.
Her owner is such a great support and even got her wheelchair painted to match this little lady's awesome personality!
Congrats Mouse on your new pink wheels!

For the past year now, I've been providing Canine Conditioning Classes across PEI and these have been SO MUCH FUN!
Participants can expect to get something COMPLETELY NEW and different than anything else you may have experienced on PEI.
These classes are meant to teach you how to exercise your dog safely and at their own level. They are backed by several years of education and practice as a physiotherapist and canine diploma holder and focus on the WHY you are doing the exercise you're doing and HOW should you do it properly to prevent injuries and train the right muscles for you and your pet's lifestyle.
My favourite part of these classes is seeing that lightbulb moment for owners. Many have exercised their dog's before; some are even trainers themselves. But when you see these owners show up to class, engaged and excited to exercise their dog, and show you what they learned since your last class, putting all of the education and practice together, it truly is something special. I even have owners find new and unique ways to incorporate these exercises in their own homes and come back with fun stories of play with a purpose for their pets.
What better way to exercise than in a group where exercise feels more like playtime instead.

A little while ago I was asked to be part of Credit Unions' Atlantic 365 campaign: Love for Local. They are highlighting local businesses across Atlantic Canada and yours truly is #89/365, Dec. 12, 2023. https://www.facebook.com/loveforlocal
They provided me with an individual photoshoot and fantastic write-up to showcase my small, local business.
Now as a physiotherapist and small animal rehab business, a photoshoot is definitely different, new, and fun, but also came with an interesting question, "If you could show us what you do in 1 picture, what would it be?" - I know my physio colleagues and I had a discussion about this afterward because physiotherapy is SO DIVERSE!
We can work with any age group in any environment. We use stethoscopes and monitor blood pressures and SPO2 vitals just like your doctors and nurses do. We provide exercises in a hospital bed or in a gym. We help people who have had strokes, spinal cord injuries, or other neurological conditions transfer safely and/or walk again. We help decrease your risk for falling by working on your balance and prescribing appropriate equipment. We set up your home environment and work with you to keep you at home and out of institutions. We help you before and after surgeries, be they orthopedic, abdominal, cancer resections, amputations, etc. We work with infants and children to set them up for a barrier-free life of success. We help with pain control by using modalities, acupuncture, tape, bracing, etc.
In my business as a small animal physio, I work with all age groups and breeds as well. I can help with starting your pet off on the right paw or be there for alternative pain control options at the end of life. I can help in the ICU with gentle range of motion and early mobilization, or I can help condition your top athletes to excel in their sport. I can work with you and your pet in your own home or off the beaten path. I can be there for you when they are first injured, or after they had a limb amputated and need a wheelchair to get around.
So going back to the question at hand. How do you show physio in 1 picture?

July was an exciting month for a few reasons: This business reached its 1 year mark and after 3 years of hard work, I finally completed my Diploma in Canine Rehabilitation.
I am so grateful to the support from my family, my colleagues, and all Islanders.
Thank you for reading my Facebook posts, trying my canine conditioning classes, asking your veterinarians to try a collaborative approach for your pet's care, and lastly to everyone looking out for their pet's best interests.
I can't wait to see where another year takes us.
Thank you PEI!

I wanted to start by thanking the PEI pet owners and local veterinary clinics for supporting my business venture. I am so lucky to be able to combine my two passions, physiotherapy and animals, into a fun career.
In the past 2 months, I have been busy behind the scenes developing my brand and connecting with many fantastic and inspiring female entrepreneurs through the PEI Business Women's Association and through the PEI Living Magazine https://issuu.com/peilivingmagazine/docs/issuu_peil_spring_23. See page 54 for details!
I have also been invited to present at local animal groups, with the most recent being the Fast n FURious Flyball Dog Racing Club. It is so lovely seeing a group of individuals who are passionate about the wellbeing of their canine athletes and are looking for ways to improve their training routines so that they can help their athletes excel in their performance and more importantly prevent injuries so that they can continue to enjoy the sport for years to come.
The last success I wanted to share with you is that I recently wrapped up my second series of Canine Conditioning Classes and have been asked to start up another one! I was able to guide my clients through the basic foundations of conditioning and watch them continue to improve from week to week until they were ready to safely perform uneven and multiplanar balance exercises at an advanced level. I learned a lot from this group and was able to adapt the information and skills to meet each dog's level and abilities.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the next few months bring on.
Stay tuned...

I am very excited to share that I am now an official dealer for Paw Prosper canine therapeutic equipment. This includes the Help 'Em Up dog harnesses, FITPAWS exercise equipment, and the Muffin's Halo for blind dogs.
I started looking into becoming a supplier when one of my clients asked me about ways she could help her dog get into and out of vehicles, and up and down stairs, following her surgery. I looked at available options and realized that, just as in human medicine, "medical equipment" for pets can be expensive and may not be feasible for all clients.
I figured what better way to support my clients than to look at getting them discounted rates on important therapeutic equipment.
I'm hoping that this new addition can help you care for your animals easier.

I was recently contacted by an individual who wanted to donate her dog's wheelchair. She told me the story of her dog, Sydney, who passed away from Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) about 1 year ago.
Sydney was raised in a very active household. Before becoming sick, she was a part of everyday outings in the community and longer adventures with the family, such as multi-hour hikes, and outings at their cottage by the beach.
The family started noticing changes in Sydney's abilities when she was about 5 years old. She started getting clumsy, and over time lost the use of her back legs and her ability to walk on her own. Despite cost, the family decided to purchase a wheelchair for her because it was important to them that she continue to be part of their family's adventures.
The owner told me about their process to get Sydney her own wheelchair and how before she got it, her quality of life was limited as she needed to rely on them to carry her around the home and outside. When she finally got her wheelchair, the family worked together to help teach her to use it and help build up her endurance so that she could be independent once more.
The family shared with me that having a wheelchair gave Sydney back her quality of life. She was able to return to going for walks and hikes, going to the cottage, running around the beach, and most importantly, was able to return to being her playful self.
For Sydney, having a wheelchair gave her back everything. So in the end, although Sydney passed, the family wanted to give her wheelchair to Active Animal Rehabilitation and Fitness Inc. so that it could be shared with others in need.
As someone who loves my dogs unconditionally and brings them with me almost everywhere I go, this story hit home. I started Active Animal Rehabilitation and Fitness Inc. because I wanted to learn how I could help Zoey continue hiking, swimming, and playing with her family and friends until the very end. With this generous donation, I can help another family give their dog, their "Sydney", joy and independence once more.
